    Site #4: TED

    1. Core purpose is explained in it's opening statement: 

    Riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world online

    This site shows what the statement means, as soon as the user clicks on to the index page, it is confronted with about 20 videos of talks that have been done at TED. TED makes them all available to users, free of charge, online. It's purpose is to be accessible and knowledgeable while being interesting. 

    2. The site accomplishes this by being easy to use, well defined and fast. There are thousands of videos on the side and using the search bar definitely helps, it is easy to use and knows what its doing. 

    3. Unique features include the conversations tab, where users ask questions for anyone to answer, sharing world views etc. Has all the usual bells and whistles too, blog, events, conferences, tickets etc, all clearly laid out at the top of the page every time. No chance of getting lost. Or bored.

    Site #3: Last.fm

    1. The site's purpose is to form a community around music. Everyone listens to music and this is a hub that brings music lovers and listeners together to read reviews, listen to current and upcoming tracks and post their own reviews. 

    2. The site accomlishes this by making posts automatic from iTunes and Spotify once the accounts have been registered and keeps track of it all without users having to manually update. Has clearly labeled tabs that don't let you get lost when clicking to a new page and the tabs all stay the same at the top as the main page headers. 

    3. Unique features include joining up with other big music site, 'Spotify' and every song listened to on there posts to the user's Last.fm account, showing how many plays, and how far up the rank it is on that user's playlist.

    1. Core Purpose of the site is a hub for book lovers to come and post reviews on books they have read, it's also a site that publishes and promotes new material and 'find's good homes for books'.

    2. The site accomplishes this task by clearly stating in their motto I guess you could call it, that they recommend, publish, and promote, on the left side bar of the page, under the header, and a brief notice. All the information is in the middle, with the sub headings:

     So the audience clearly knows the site is for them to use and express their opinions in a relatively free way, but sharing knowldge and benefitting others. The site has clearly set out their grid making it easy to view and easy to navigate. 

    3. Unique features are the sections. 'For Book Lovers, Authors or VIP's' Inviting users to have a look and maybe post something up for others to read, or just to look to get the latest on a book you might want to  read, and want an honest review.

    Is another smart area and just reinforces the community and the experience the audience will gain from visiting the site.

    I'm playing catch up here, but having a quick look at 4 social media or community websites now and the aim was to: 

    1. Identify the core purpose of the site.

    2. Identify how the site accomplishes this task.

    3. Identify what unique features the site has to make the experience better. 

     

    Site #1: Deaf Pigeon

    1. 'Fixed Gear' Biking site, dedicated to enthusiasts and taking on a 'hub' feel.

    2. Brings 'fixed gear' bike enthusiasts to a central point to find out current events in the bike world, new stuff, gadgets, meets and similar people. Accomplishes this byt making everything clear and concise using tabs and headers.

    3. Unique features - I wouldnt say the site has 'unique' features in that they're completely new and exciting, but they are unique to their brand in that they direct people to different areas of the site, including the blog, the events page, use social media.

    There is a 'links' page that takes users to another page where all the members have posted up their favourite shops, places to go, movies to watch etc. Helps people identify with the community that's been created.

    USE. Once the idea is nailed down, then break down how the page is going to work with all the links. Commercial ones with a lot more content will be bigger.

    Beyonce is a huge artist, but just looking at how a website works to represent her is interesting. It's cohesive, but also interactive. Uses a lot of imagery, but there is a strong typographic element too. Obviously this isn't a community I'll be doing as it's a singular artist, but the website is pretty sweet.

    • New Zealand Designers (for people who are NZ fashion enthusiasts)

      - Thinking only of people who prefer to buy NZ design clothing / Quality clothing (they may buy other 'designer' brands but more thinking Karen Walker, Stolen Girlfriends, Lonely Hearts, Zambesi, Moochi etc. 

      - Most New Zealand designers already have good websites, do I combine them in one area similar to a directory?

      - Do I include a where to go area? Or do I cover the community behind it, the people who wear it etc.

    • Vintage clothing / Second Hand / Op-shopping
    • Vinyl Collection (RPM/Slow Boat Records)
    • Jewellery? (NZ jewellery possibly?)

      - Feel like I could picture this, but it's still very early and may not be feasible. However, local artists are covered, so Jewellery could go.

    • Second Hand Bookshops

    All of the above would apply to the Wellington region, not necessarily the city. I feel the city is too limited, but the region is workable, but nation-wide is too broad?
